Future Cities Competition
Future City Competition (FCC) is a fun and exciting program for 7th and 8th grade students. Sponsored by the National Engineers Week, this national program introduces students to engineering with the popular SimCity 3000 software. Students design future cities with simulation software, build scale models, write essays and give oral reports on their city's design.
The Northeast Service Cooperative, Success Beyond the Classroom, OPUS Architects and Engineers, and the American Society of Civil Engineers Minnesota Section collaborate with dozens of high technology companies to bring this annual event to Minnesota.
Judging for the event were engineers from 3M, Medtronic, OPUS, Excel Energy, Minnegasco, RLK, Bonestroo, TKDA, MnDOT, and many other Minnesota companies.
Students Benefit from Future Cities Competition
- Students better understand practical applications of math, science, social studies and computer learning as they plan their own cities.
- They have fun working with SimCity software (provided free to registered schools).
- Teams work with engineers assigned to support their learning.
- While learning about cities, students develop a project plan, work in teams, write an essay about their city, develop a scale model with recycled materials, and make an oral presentation of their work at a state competition in January.
- One team may win a free trip to compete at Nationals in Washington, D.C., in January or February.
