Physical Impairments
"Physical impairment" means a medically diagnosed chronic, physical impairment, either congenital or acquired, that adversely affects physical or academic functioning and results in the need for special education and related services.
Intervention for children identified with physical disabilities is critical for academic success. Children need to learn how to move, utilize adapted equipment and assistive technology and maximize their physical abilities in the most independent manner. It is important that staff be aware of how the disability impacts on learning and functioning and to allow and expect the child to perform within their capabilities.
Services available:
- Classroom observation and assessment of students with physical and/or neurological conditions that impact learning and functioning in the educational setting.
- Review of medical and educational reports and records to determine how and if physical/neurological condition impacts learning (often in coordination with OT/PT/DAPE).
- Consultation to on-site staff regarding strategies and accommodation options (including lending of assistive devices) to improve function and reduce impact of physical/neurological condition of learning.
- Attendance at IEP/periodic review and team planning meetings.
- Child specific and general inservice to school teams.
- Resource and material distribution to increase knowledge and awareness to school team regarding how physical disability impacts learning and functioning.
- Educator network that meets four times per year.
- Link to Minnesota PH/D Network.
